Eugene Reads to Young Students

Raiders safety Hiram Eugene visited a local pre-school recently, and learned that it's never to early to start reading.

Raiders safety Hiram Eugene. took time out of his schedule this holiday season to visit Harriet Tubman Pre-School. Eugene found joy in reading to the kids. He took reading to a new level by also interacting with the youngsters. While reading a book about feelings, he involved the children by asking questions about what they saw in the pictures.

Eugene said, “It’s important for children to learn behavioral skills and manners. They have to learn to pay attention, which is why I asked them questions while I read.” By bringing conversation and questions to their level, Eugene was able to connect with the kids.

Harriet Tubman Pre-School is a part of an educational readiness program. The program is available throughout 32 centers in Oakland and consists of children from ages 3-8. The pre-school makes an effort to bring a variety of people from the community into the school to speak with the kids.
Da’Monica, a representative for Harriet Tubman Pre-School says, “We chose the Raiders to visit the kids in hope that they will see him as a leader. We hope they will see him reading and want to learn how also.”

The kids learn foundational literacy skills, but also learn about different cultures from around the world. Robinson said of her satisfaction with Eugene, “I think he did a great job. He has a family of his own so he understood and had patience with the kids.”

It’s not often three- and four-year-olds are read to and entertained by a Raiders player. Although young, the kids seemed to appreciate having Eugene there. They were excited to pose for pictures with Eugene and to tell him everything they have been learning. Eugene’s visit to Harriet Tubman Pre-School was a success and the kids look forward to watching him play.
